Musical Instruments

Rhythm, beats, pitch, melody! You must know of what we are talking about. Music is a small part of our life which simply enhances our life, fills it with love, joy and peace. It is believed that music has the power to heal your soul and make you feel at peace. The word music was derived from a Greek word called the Muses which means music.

We all know the meaning of music, but do you know the real definition of music? According to the great Greek philosophers, music is a melodious sound which is ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. The chirping of the birds, sound of water, the blowing of the wind etc. all create different types of beautiful music.

There are hundreds of different types of music instruments which create different sounds and are used to create various types of music.

In the early years, people used to make varied sounds from the simple drums, and vessels which they slowly modified to create instruments especially for the various types of sounds the instrument could generate. Today, in a total there are 482 different music instruments that are known and played by people of different countries. The type of music instruments varies according to the country, culture and the interest of the people.

The musical instruments can be divided into four main categories namely-

  • String instruments
  • Wind instruments
  • Brass instruments
  • Percussion instruments

Each of these categories is differentiated based on the mechanism by which the instrument is played and the way it sounds. The instruments which produce sound by vibrating a string are included into this category of instruments. The string instruments include the violin, guitar, piano etc.

The instruments which make different sounds due to the simple vibration of air inside the instrument are categorized under the wind instruments. The wind instruments include the flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, pipe etc.

The brass instruments are the ones which are made of brass and produce different types of sound by blowing air into them. The brass instruments include the tuba, French horn, trombone etc.

while the instruments which are played or produce sound when are hit or simply shaken are included in the category of percussion instruments. This category includes the different instruments like drums, xylophones, triangle, bells, bongo, cymbals etc. each of these instruments makes a different sound but look beautiful when played on a beautiful melodious tune.

There are many huge orchestras which play all the different types of instruments creating a very beautiful music.
