Pop Music Facts
Pop Music is the shortened form of Popular Music. It is considered to be a separate genre of contemporary popular music where rhythm plays a very important part and people could dance along listening to such music.
Unlike other types of popular music, the lyrics of pop music is written by professional songwriters and popularized by the singers singing the song. This kind of music appears in popular record charts because of high popularity of the song both in terms of record sales as well as the airtime.
To appreciate Pop Music, a person does not require any knowledge regarding music. Any person is able to enjoy such music. Lyrics and music of Pop Song are not at all concerned with such artistic ideas like musical form or aesthetics. The primary object of writing such music is to make the listener of the music get enjoyment thereby leading to its commercial success. It is not necessary that all music of this genre would succeed.
The term ‘pop music’ was coined in 1926 to characterize that kind of music that have popular appeal. But, since 1950s, such kind of music is considered as a lighter alternative to rock and roll form.
Generally, pop music would run for less than five minutes. The instrumentation used to accompany such music could be as large as an orchestra to as small as a lone singer. Generally, a pop band consists of a lead guitarist, a bassist, a drummer, and a keyboardist along with one or more vocalists.
Popularity of this type of music started to increase from late 1940s with introduction of newer technologies in music recording industry. Introduction of such technology made it possible to produce recorded music that was of better quality and much cheaper in price. Because of these reasons, record sales increased quite a lot.
But, the evolution of Pop Music was not easy in the United Kingdom because of strict regulations regarding playing of records over the radio that was in place till 1967.
Though this kind of music started developing in the United States in 1950s in terms of rock and roll music, it got a real fillip after the appearance such groups like Beatles in the United Kingdom in 1960s. Another important group that influenced the development of this kind music in 1970s in the Swedish group called ABBA.
This type of music is still very popular and is influencing the music of different countries all over the world.
